My Valentine Swap Boxes

I made a Valentine button ball garland for my valentine swap partner Retro Sandie.  I sent her other goodies in her boxes too but this is the only thing I took a pic of.
I decorated this medium candy box with with one of my picket fences.

Here's the side. I love this paper fringe that I bought from Jennifer at The Sugar Pink Boutique!
Since I couldn't find a large Valentine heart box, I decorated  a little heart, too!  I loved using these mini pink pom poms- also from Jenifer.  My boxes seem simple compared to others I've seen but I had to go with my simple cottage style!
Here's the side with more fabric trims.  If you want to see pics of the other goodies I sent, go see Sandie's pics!

I find this fascinating! We don't really 'do' Valentine's Day in the UK. Traditionally, it is a day when young couples try to do something romantic and, according to my Grandmother (born in the 1880s) the only time when a young Victorian girl could risk making her feelings about a young man known to him. Now it has become a card producer's heaven and a time of anxiety for many and even of loneliness for those who feel unloved. It has drifted down to children as young as 9 or 10 and you just wouldn't believe the number of times I've had to deal with distraught kids who didn't receive a card or gift from anybody. I actually began to hate it - a card from mother or teacher just won't hack it and we decided to ban it in one school. Some of the girls were so swollen headed about the attention they received and others had their lack of popularity rubbed in their faces. We even had a boy try to overdose because 'nobody loved him as he was so ugly.' Awful for an eleven year old child to feel this way. We seem to have imported the idea that it is an important day for children without importing the idea that it is a day of friendship as well as romantic attachment.
The American way of celebrating seems so much fun and far less brutal. I love your tokens of affection and the idea of home made gifts. Lovely. Thanks for sharing!

My Dear Swap Partner Holly, I just can't say enough for all of the beautiful things you stuffed in that box! You should not apologize for your "simple" designs! Your designs are an extension of YOU and they are wonderful!!! I consider myself truly fortunate to have been on the receiving end of that beautiful box. And my lovely garland is a treasure!! Thank you. I was tickled pink!!!!
Smiles and hugs,
Sandie XOXO
